BMW Motorrad recalls R 1300 GS globally

BMW Motorrad, the renowned German motorcycle manufacturer, has issued a global recall for its flagship adventure bike, the R 1300 GS. The recall comes in response to a serious problem related to the starter relay, which has affected GS models sold across the globe.

The Problem

According to reports the R 1300 GS starter relay has been prone to water or condensation ingress. This moisture accumulation can trigger an uncommanded engine startup, leading to overheating of the starter relay and, in some cases, electrical fires. The issue poses a significant safety risk for riders and has prompted BMW to take immediate action. BMW has recorded 8 cases worldwide where the starter relay has been burnt or melted.

Recall Details

  • Initial Recall (February 2024): BMW initially addressed the problem with a corrective recall in February. According to the company, this recall aimed to fix the issue by rectifying damage to the plastic coating of the starter relay. However, despite these efforts, new cases continued to emerge.
  • Second Recall (Ongoing): In response to persistent incidents, BMW has launched a second recall. This renewed effort aims to comprehensively address the fiery start relay problem. Owners of affected R 1300 GS motorcycles are advised to disconnect the battery immediately if they encounter any issues related to the starter relay.

BMW Motorrad will be replacing the semiconductor relay with a new electromechanical starter relay to avoid this persistent issue. This will be applicable to motorcycles manufactured before March 2024. The newer motorcycles are already equipped with the electromechanical starter relay. BMW will also upgrade the software patch in order to make the motorcycle compatible with the new relay system. Estimates indicate that about 25,000 motorcycles will have to undergo these changes.

In India, the recall has not been issued as the motorcycle was launched only a month ago and the bikes sold in India were produced after March 2024.
