BMW India, in June 2022, announced that the brand would launch a total of 10 special edition models in India. These will be a part of BMW M’s 50th anniversary. So far, BMW India has launched 7 special editions. The last one was the X4 50 Jahre M Edition. And now, the brand has launched the latest one – M8 Competition Coupé 50 Jahre M Edition.
BMW says the M8 Competition Coupé embodies a perfect fusion of exceptional performance and progressive luxury. The brand says that this 2-door 4-seater sports car is the most powerful superlative of all the BMWs. It is bold, audacious and uncompromising, claims BMW. Furthermore, it comes with BMW M’s most powerful engine, a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. But, BMW has elegantly translated its M genes for everyday use. The M8 Competition Coupé offers a luxurious ambience with the ultimate motorsport feeling and is designed to challenge the limits of dynamic performance.
The new limited edition from BMW India is available only with the higher-spec M Competition package of the M8 Coupé. BMW India has priced the M8 Competition Coupé 50 Jahre M Edition at INR 2,55,00,000 ex-showroom. Though BMW India says it is a limited edition, there’s no confirmation of how many units will be up for grabs.
The M8 Competition Coupé 50 Jahre M Edition will be available in 3 metallic colour options – M Isle of Man Green, Aventurine Red and M Brooklyn Grey. Additionally, customers can also choose from special BMW Individual colour options. These include – Daytona Beach Blue (50 Jahre M Edition exclusive), Frozen Marina Bay Blue, Frozen Brilliant White, Frozen Deep Green & Frozen Deep Grey.
At the front, the M8 features the hexagonal kidney grille with M typical double slats with the iconic four-eye BMW Laserlight on either side. There are also large air intakes that widen at the bottom, hinting at the immense cooling requirements of the high-performance engine and brakes. There are also few but precise surface lines that convey the extent of the power lurking beneath the hood. Look at the top of the car, and you see an M carbon-fibre roof to reduce weight.
At the sides, you see the flared aluminium wings with M gills and M8 Competition designation. There are also new 20-inch double-spoke jet black alloy wheels and red-coloured M compound brake callipers. Other exterior highlights and changes include – a special 50 Jahre M emblem, Competition badging, and kidney grille in high black gloss.
In addition to this, BMW is also offering M Carbon exterior package as standard on the new M8 for the first time in India. The package includes lots of carbon fibre sections all over. These include – the front bumper, side air intake, exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler and the complete rear diffuser. Other additional options include an M Carbon engine cover, M Carbon ceramic brakes and more.
BMW says the driver-focused interior of the M8 Coupé is a commitment to sportiness and absolute luxury. Getting in, you see the M8 Competition lettering on the door sill. On the inside, the driver and passenger are greeted to a sporty and low seating position. The M8 Competition Coupé 50 Jahre M Edition features M Sport Seats, which offer comfort as well as superior grip, thanks to their side bolsters.
The interior gets a full leather two-tone Merino upholstery with hexagonal embroidery in the seat centre section and an exclusive illuminated ‘M8’ logo in the headrest. The interior also gets M seat belts and an M Headliner Alcantara Anthracite.
Other interior highlights include a Harman Kardon surround-sound system, ambient lighting with 6 dimmable designs and a 40:20:40 split rear seat for greater flexibility. Customers can even upgrade the audio system to an optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system.
Powering the BMW M8 Competition Coupé 50 Jahre M Edition is the M TwinPower Turbo 4.4-litre V8. This is amongst the most powerful V8 engine BMW M has ever developed for a production vehicle. With the M Competition package, the engine makes another 25 HP. This takes the total output to 625 HP at 6,000 rpm and 750 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 5,600 rpm. BMW also claims the M8 Competition Coupé 50 Jahre M Edition accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.2 seconds.
The engine is paired with an 8-speed M Steptronic Sport automatic transmission. All that power is sent to all four wheels using BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system with variable torque distribution. Furthermore, M Sport Differential ensures that the engine puts down power optimally in various conditions. It also gets Adaptive M Suspension for individual response behaviour.
