BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe revealed

BMW has revealed a new Gran Coupe variant in the BMW 8-Series and the four-door 8-Series Gran Coupe will go on sale after its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019. It is expected to cost around the USD 86,000 in the international market. The 8-Series Gran Coupe is expected to replace the 6-Series Coupe and will be pitted against the Porsche Panamera, Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7.

In terms of styling, the Gran Coupe borrows the design cues from the 8-Series but comes in a larger four-door avatar. The 8-Series Gran Coupe comes with an angular kidney grille with chrome surrounds, muscular bonnet ridges, large air intakes on the front apron, adaptive LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, aero ducts on the side, a coupe-like sloping roof design which meets the boot that gets an integrated ducktail spoiler, aero ducts on the rear bumper with a large black diffuser integrating the exhaust end pipes and the rear gets wraparound LED taillights.

On the interior, the 8 Series Gran Coupe gets a minimalist design dashboard with a central infotainment system sitting above the air-conditioning controls, and the centre gear console has the crystal cut glass gear selector and rotary iDrive selector. The instrument cluster is a 10.25-inch fully digital unit called Live Cockpit in BMW terminology.

The exterior dimensions of the Gran Coupe measure at  5,082mm in length, 1,932mm in width and 1,407mm in height as compared to the 8 Series its 239mm longer, 30mm wider and 66mm taller. The extra length and wheelbase, which is longer by 201mm, allows for two extra doors and seat space in the back.  

The 8 Series Gran Coupe will be available in a variety of engine options:-

  • 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol motor which produces 340 Hp and 500 Nm of torque.
  • 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine which develops 320 Hp and 680 Nm of torque
  • 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 engine that produces 530 Hp of power and can sprint from 0-100 kmph in 3.9 seconds.

In terms of the transmission, all the cars come mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 840i and M850i xDrive come with an M Sport rear differential. All 4-wheel drive models get rear wheel steering as standard and as an option on the rear wheel drive cars.
