The BMW M2 has already made way to the Indian market. Now, on international soil, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe continues road testing and is expected to make a debut in the coming months. If things go as planned, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe will also make its way to India to rival the likes of Mercedes-Benz CLA & Audi A3. This will then become the brands entry-level sedan in the Indian market. But no official announcement has been made yet.
The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe has been spotted testing earlier and the car has a coupe-like profile. Up front, the car is expected to get a kidney grille design and semi-hexagonal daytime running lights in the double-barrelled headlights. The lighting is expected to be all LED and the roof-line a very coupe-like sloping to meet the rear. Details of the interiors are scarce at the moment but the car is expected to get a new generation fully digital instrument console, an 8-10 inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre along with chrome highlights and the gear selector area is likely to be shared with the latest 1-Series. The car is also likely to come in the M Sport iteration with an M steering wheel and metallic highlights on the dashboard. The cabin is speculated to have enough space to provide enough legroom to people around 6 feet tall, who would be able to sit one behind the other, but the headroom in the rear may be insufficient for people who are over 6 feet.
In the engine department, the 2-Series Gran Coupe is expected to come in the 140 HP – 218d or the more powerful 190 HP – 220d, in the diesel engine option. In the petrol versions, the car is likely to get the choice of the 218i – a three-cylinder engine or a larger 2.0-litre petrol engine as seen on the X1. The former 1.5L turbo-petrol engine is likely to be assembled locally and used on the X1 and the new 3 Series, depending on the demand in the local and ASEAN markets.
The BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe is expected to be launched in 2020-21.
