BMW is planning a major update for the G 310 R & G 310 GS motorbikes. According to new patent designs, the company is working on a camshaft system for single cylinder units.
BMW’s Shift-cam concept
In the BMW S 1000 RR, the bike maker has already used this concept. THanks to the new technology, the cam is shifted laterally which gives more space for the combustion. More space equals more power. Further, as an added bonus, this also prevents the unburnt air-fuel mixture from entering the exhaust port.
BMW’s new patent
Unlike the shift cam on the bigger engines, this time around, BMW has managed to make the whole system quite compact. This is due to the fact that now BMW has to fit this on a smaller engine. BMW has put the solenoid between the valves which means the spark plug too would need to be moved to a different angle. Also, the camshaft sliding will need one additional idle gear to connect the intake and exhaust valves.
The patent also shed light on the engines that this technology could debut on. The 300cc motors of G 310 R, G 310 GS, and the G 310 RR will get this tech. That said, it could take some time for the technology to reach the production stage, but this is something that is being planned for the near future.
BMW G 310 RR
This is the first bike in the family of G 310. It has a sporty design and is currently one of the most desirable bikes in the under 500cc category. At the time of launch in India, the company delivered 1,000 units of the bike in just 100 days post launch.
The bike is based on the TVS Apache RR 310 which too is selling in good numbers. The bike is produced under the joint venture of BMW and TVS, with both siblings enjoying a successful run.
