Given the demand for electric vehicles in the country, Bajaj has announced its plans for the future. The company will set up a new electric vehicle manufacturing facility at Akurdi, Pune. The plan is to make the facility production-ready by June 2022. Bajaj mentioned that this facility would also manufacture products that will be exported to foreign countries. Bajaj Auto will invest close to INR 300 Crore for setting up this facility, which will have a production capacity of 5,00,000 EVs per annum. Setting up of this facility will generate employment of over 800 people, which is excellent news for the local public. Interestingly, Akurdi is the site where the original Chetak was first manufactured.
Keeping up with the current generation trend, Bajaj’s facility will have all the latest tech. The two-wheeler manufacturer mentioned that this new facility would get all the cutting-edge robotic and automated manufacturing systems. This will include all departments, including logistics, material handling, fabrication and painting, assembly and quality assurance. The facility will ensure maximum efficiency of the workers and also ensure the best worker ergonomics. Spread over a total area of half a million sq. feet, the facility will become a very important asset of Bajaj Auto for the future.
This setting up of the facility will also attract a number of vendors who will further invest around INR 250 Crore. Baja Auto has confirmed that the first electric vehicle will roll out of this factory by June 2022. Alongside the manufacturing facility, Bajaj also has its R&D centre. And thus, this new manufacturing facility will work in synergy with the R&D centre and become a hub for designing, developing and manufacturing a complete range of electric vehicles. With the demand for EVs increasing steadily, this new manufacturing facility will help Bajaj Auto achieve its aspirations in e-mobility.
