Bajaj could be planning to introduce a CNG powered motorcycle in the Indian market. The demand for commuter bikes with high fuel economy appears to have led to the idea of introducing CNG motorcycles in India. The fuel is also less harmful for the environment as compared to conventional petrol engines, thus hitting two birds with one stone.
The Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Housing and Urban Affairs revealed that India is moving towards being a gas-based economy with a projected share of natural gas in our energy mix set to increase from 6% to 15% by 2030. To boost this Bajaj could be planning to introduce CNG-powered motorcycle by the second quarter of 2024.
The Bajaj CNG motorcycle is likely to be in the 110cc to 160cc displacement range. The brand is likely to target the commuter segment with the new CNG powered bike. According to reports, the new CNG powered motorcycle is likely to cut down fuel and operation costs by 50% to 60%.
Furthermore, reports suggest that the Bajaj CNG bike will be manufactured at the brand’s Aurangabad plant. Reports also suggest that the company is likely to have a production capacity of 2 lakh units per annum. This will help Bajaj cope up with the new demand of the CNG motorcycle and run parallel with the expanding CNG network in India.
The CNG network in the Indian market is rapidly expanding and has more than 5,000 stations. Yesterday, the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Housing and Urban Affairs also inaugurated 201 CNG (compressed natural gas stations) across 17 states in India. Also, the country’s first small-scale LNG (SSLNG) unit was set up yesterday by GAIL in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh.
Reports also suggest that the new CNG-powered Bajaj motorcycle is likely to be christened – Bruzer.
