Bajaj is looking at introducing an electric autorickshaw soon. Test mule of the same was spotted earlier, which makes us believe that the launch is imminent.
At present, Bajaj offers the autorickshaw in petrol, diesel, CNG and LPG powertrains. By adding an EV option, the market leader will cater to a larger customer base. Further, electrification of the last mile connectivity options like the humble auto will lead to significant cost savings.
In terms of visual differences, the electric autorickshaw is mostly similar to the regular auto. It measures 8.6 ft long, 4.2 ft wide and 5.5 ft tall. Ground clearance is 170 mm. Other details include a round front fascia, halogen lights, metal mudguard and 12-inch tyres. Overall, we can say that the electric autorickshaw will be very similar to the regular one.
Other differences include new plastic panelling in the driver’s space, a larger dashboard and lockable storage. The electric auto also had a digital instrument cluster with two dials.
It is reported that this electric auto will have around 120 km of range on a full charge. Charging time could be around 4 hours but might vary depending on the capacity of the charger. With rising fuel costs ( CNG is close to 100 bucks / kg), auto drivers will find the electric version to be quite frugal and improve their profits. The top speed of the auto is limited to 33.2 km/h.
Bajaj could also give out a swappable battery where users will be able to swap their depleted batteries with fully charged units at a battery swapping station. But for this, there needs to be sufficient demand for the system
At present, Bajaj has a 70 percent market share in this segment. Hence, as a leader, new initiatives are expected to be more welcome with existing customers.
The petrol autorickshaw is priced at INR 2.05 lakh. The CNG one has a premium above this while electric auto could cost 50 percent more than this amount. That said, the higher one-time premium is much more affordable with lower running costs.
