Chetak Technology Ltd today inaugurated a new plant in Akurdi, which is their EV manufacturing plant. The choice of Akurdi as the location is because this is where the iconic Chetak scooter was born in the 1970s. Chetak has been a household name in the Indian market ever since it was launched. The scooter played an instrumental role in defining mobility in the early days of scooters in the country. Then in October 2019, Chetak made an empathic comeback in its EV avatar. Since then, Chetak has rapidly expanded its sales and service network to nearly 30 cities in India.
Currently, 14,000 Chetaks are already plying on the Indian roads, with more than 16,000 bookings in line for the future. The manufacturing facility’s capacity will reach 5,00,000 EVs per annum when running at full capacity. Chetak Technology Ltd., along with its vendor partners, will invest nearly INR 750 crores in this EV manufacturing plant. Spread over an area of half a million square feet, the facility will generate employment for 11,000 people. Along with the state-of-the-art R&D centre, CTL’s Akurdi facility will become the one-stop place for the design, development, and manufacturing of electric vehicles.
Chetak Technology Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bajaj Auto Ltd., aims to provide sustainable and futuristic mobility solutions. Its offering Chetak has received quite a positive response from the market. And Bajaj will look to keep the momentum from here. For 2022, there were some reports of Bajaj updating the Chetak, of which a powerful electric motor was on the cards. We can also expect Bajaj to equip a more powerful battery pack with more localisation. With the new battery and motor, we can also expect the range and power to go up. The current iteration of the Bajaj Chetak Electric retails at an ex-showroom price of INR 1,53,298 (ex-showroom).
