Piaggio, the Italian premium two-wheeler maker has some big plans for the Indian market. The company is aiming to take on the highly active Indian mid-size motorcycle market with the Aprilia. This will happen sometime in the second half of 2023. This move reflects Piaggio’s plan to revamp and reinforce its two-wheeler business in the country.
We have news that the scooter portfolio will get a new set of engines and new variants, But the biggest launch will happen in the motorcycle space. Designed and developed for emerging markets, India will become one of the key manufacturing bases. This new motorcycle will be locally manufactured in India, apart from China, Vietnam and Indonesia.
We assume that Aprilia will launch this motorbike sometime in September. This is just ahead of the first-ever MotoGP race in India. Developed with keeping the Indian market in mind, the sports bike will have a deep localisation level out of the company’s factory in Baramati. As per sources, the motorcycle will take on the likes of KTM RC 400, and Kawasaki Ninja in a highly competitive mid-size motorcycle segment.
Having completed its 25th anniversary in India, Piaggio pretty much understands the Indian market well now. In fact, the company feels the country has reached a point, where the two-wheeler market is now made up of various segments. Hence, the upcoming Piaggio scooters planned for India will cater to the varying needs of the evolved Indian riders. We will see scooters beyond the commuter segment, such as touring, cruisers, luxury, and racing, among others. The main focus is to expand under the umbrella of the Aprilia and Vespa scooter brands.
To that effect, there’s a complete lineup of Aprilia scooters. These get a new, higher-performance i-GET engine that provides enhanced acceleration and braking ability. The Aprilia Typhoon is one such product, built for aspiring racers, that forms part of the high-performance scooter segment.
