Aprilia SXR 125 Crossmax launch delayed to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic

Italian brand Piaggio showcased its Aprilia SXR 160 Crossmax scooter at the 15th edition of the Auto Expo 2020 in Delhi. It was also revealed that the brand will be introducing the maxi-scooter in the Indian market by the end of Q3 in 2020 closely followed by the Aprilia SXR 125 cross max which is based on its elder sibling but features a smaller 125cc engine from the Aprilia SR 125 sold in the Indian market to keep the prices competitive.

But according to new reports, the Aprilia SXR 125 could see delays in production and the bike is likely to come to the Indian market earliest by January 2021 due to the disruption caused amidst COVID-19 pandemic. The Aprilia SXR 160 which was planned to be launched in mid-2020, has also been postponed to late September or early October owing to the ongoing lockdown.

The Aprilia SXR 125 draws its styling from the SXR 160 that features signature Aprilia triple LED headlamps as seen on high capacity Aprilia motorcycles, LED daytime running lights, sleek LED tail lamps, a body integrated smoked windscreen, raised ergonomic handlebar, chrome exhaust heat shield, large LCD display for instrumentation, larger under-seat storage, split glove box, ergonomic seats, chrome exhaust heat shield, telescopic front fork, 12-inch 5-spoke petal patterned alloy wheels etc. The Aprilia SXR 125 is likely to be powered by the same BS6 compliant 125cc 3-valve 4-stroke air-fan cooled engine that makes 10 PS of power and 9.7 Nm of torque matched to an automatic CVT gearbox.

The new two-wheelers will be manufactured at Piaggio’s state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Baramati and will be offered in a variety of colour options.

The Aprilia SXR 125 is likely to be priced around the INR 1 Lakh mark and competes directly with the Suzuki Burgman 125 which has been upgraded to BS6 conformity and is priced at INR 77,900 ex-showroom, Delhi but has a lower power output at 8.7 PS and 10 Nm. The Aprilia SXR 160 is likely to be priced around INR 1.20 Lakh ex-showroom.
