Skoda India car sales not up to mark?

As per a detailed sales report released online, Skoda has been found struggling to keep up with the pace of its direct rivals in the C1, C2, and D2 segments. The brand’s year-on-year sales for various products have been primarily negative for the FY2024- 25.

A close look at the report shows that its Kushaq SUV has been in the top 10 losers in the month-on-month charts as it faced a strong downfall of 13.33 per cent for March 2025 sales as compared to February 2025.

The total units sold by the brand in March 2025 is 7,422, which is a factory dispatch number to the dealerships. This number has increased from 2,886 units in November 2024 due to the introduction of Skoda’s first-ever affordable car, the Kylaq.

The report also reveals that the Superb sedan faced a 100 per cent drop in year-on-year sales in FY2024- 25. Additionally, Kushaq took a hit of a 30.6 per cent sales drop in the previous fiscal year.

With all the massive discounts, after-sales service add-ons, and marketing techniques, Skoda has sold a total of 5,327 units of the Kylaq. The company recently stretched the introductory price offer of Rs 7.49 lakh on the Kylaq base model.

The primary reason behind these minimal sales numbers is perhaps Skoda’s strategy. The company’s brand director, Peter Janeba, himself accepted before the launch of the Kylaq that they need to restructure their product strategy to survive in India.

There have been rumours that Skoda is in talks with Mahindra and even with Tata to curate next-gen affordable models for the Indian market.

Our verdict

Skoda’s vision for India has become clear over the span of 25 years. The Indian car market has evolved over time, and the Czech carmaker now understands that it needs to build more affordable and well-structured products like Kylaq to keep the pace going.
