MG to launch Maxus D90 SUV in India by 2020

According to a media report, MG Motors is planning to launch yet another SUV by next year. The car that is being planned, is the Maxus D90 from MG’s parent company SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). The company will be soon launching the Hector SUV and the brand is planning to launch the second car, eZS electric SUV next followed by the Maxus D90.

The Maxus D90 is a large SUV with the exterior dimensions measuring 5,005mm in length, 1,932mm in width, 1,875mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,950mm and a ground clearance of 210mm. The SUV is built on a light truck platform and the Maxus D90 features a massive mesh grille in chrome, a sleek air dam, and vertical air intakes on the outer edges of the bumper which integrates the fog lamps. The SUV gets adaptive LED headlamps and tail lamps. The Maxus D90 depending on the variant will get large 17-inch to 19-inch alloy wheels in dual tone colour.

The Maxus D90 has a large exterior and owing to this, on the interior, the SUV has a spacious cabin and the model for sale in China, gets features like an 8.0-inch digital instruments console, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 360-degree camera, three-zone climate control air-conditioning, heated/cooled seats, panoramic sunroof, etc.

In the engine department, the China-spec model is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine which produces 224 HP of power and 360 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. There is speculation of a diesel-powered variant, which will be much favoured in the Indian market and is currently under development. It is also expected to come with 4-wheel-drive and a low ratio transfer case. The SUV is expected to come with 7 drive modes – Economy, Automatic, Motion, Sand, Snow, Mud and Rock.

The safety equipment on the India-spec model is expected to be ABS with EBD, ESP, six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorages and other functions such as autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist and automatic park function which are found on the international spec model.

The Maxus D90 is expected to be priced around the INR 30 to 35 lakh mark and if launched in India, at this price, the car will give stiff competition to the Mahindra Alturas G4, Ford Endeavour and the crowd favourite Toyota Fortuner.
