Gorilla Glass technology that first was introduced for saving the repeatedly breaking mobile phone screens has not only benefited the mobile phones, but also the automotive world. Ford’s iconic sportscar comeback, the GT will be using this technology.
After the launch of the iPhone, 4 billion Gorilla Glass equipped mobile phones have been traded internationally.
Replacing the ‘usual’ windshield glass, Ford engineers fond out the use of Gorilla glass to be more lighter for the car. While the old windshield glass was hooked up of multi glass panes, the new technology compromises of three sections and is known as ‘Hybrid Window’. It consists of a pane of toughened automotive glass, a noise absorbing thermoplastic layer and an annealed outer glass layer. With equipping the front glass and the rear engine cover glass area of GT with such gorilla glass, Ford has managed to save 5.5 kgs from the cars weight. That weight loss means better acceleration, and the lowered center of gravity means better handling.
Not for the first time, Ford had already shown this clever use of technology by equipping their Multi-Material Lightweight Vehicle Concept car last year leading to a hefty reduction of 320 kgs from the model which was a traditional Fusion.
Technology sure has no boundaries.
