Maruti Suzuki introduced its Jimny in the lifestyle off-roader segment to lock horns with the veteran, the Mahindra Thar. However, the Maruti Jimny comes with a 5-door option, more family friendly than the 3-door Thar. But, even being positioned as a family SUV the Jimny has not made a mark in terms of sales in the heavily desired SUV segment in India. Maruti Suzuki has a strong sales portfolio in the Indian market but the Jimny is the slowest selling car in the brand.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny Sales Compared to its Competition
While the Jimny offers rugged exteriors and off-road capabilities, its sales since its introduction have diminished. When the brand introduced the Jimny in India, in June 2023, the SUV made a healthy sale of around 3,071 units. In the following month the sales improved to around 3778 units.
However, from there on the numbers have dwindled down to just 163 units in the last month. Comparatively, the Mahindra Thar, which is the prime competitor showcases a steady sales figure throughout the period. On an average, Mahindra has sold the Thar nearly three times as much as the Maruti Jimny SUV.
Maruti Suzuki also tried to revive the Jimny’s diminishing sales by offering discounts and accessories. The brand slashed the ex-showroom price of the Jimny by a whopping INR 2 lakhs and was also offering accessories worth INR 25,000, but to no avail. The introduction of a new special Jimny Thunder Edition also did not work in favour of Maruti Suzuki.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny – Overview
The Jimny comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 103 Hp of power and 132 Nm of torque. The SUV comes with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox and an All-Grip Pro all-wheel drive system. The Jimny measures 3,985mm in length, 1,645mm in width and 1,720mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,590 mm. The SUV also comes with excellent approach, break-over and departure angles as well as a 210mm high ground clearance.
