Mahindra Thar was already a pretty well-packaged SUV with a lot of fans following. Now, with the launch of the RWD version, Thar got even more accessible thus attracting a wider range of audience. This is apparent from the waiting period that the Thar RWD is on currently, which is close to 18 months. With a price range of INR 9.99 to 13.49 lakh, Mahindra has nailed it with aggressive pricing. Noteworthy to mention, this is only the introductory pricing applicable only for the initial 10,00 bookings.
Mahindra Thar RWD – A Brief Overview
The Thar 2WD is available with two engine options. First is a 117 HP, 300 Nm, 1.5-litre diesel engine. This motor is only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The second engine on offer is the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit that does duty on the Thar 4WD. Then again it is only offered with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The power out figures too remain the same as with the 4X4 variants, at 152 HP and 320 Nm of torque. Thus, if you are out there looking for a diesel automatic, you will have to look at the pricey 2.2-litre 4WD Thar.
The Thar 2WD comes only in AX (O) and LX trims. The diesel powertrain is available in both trims. Meanwhile, for the petrol, customers can also have it in the higher-spec LX trim.
What Other Options Are In The Segment?
As of now, Mahindra Thar 2WD does not have a direct rival in the market. But with Maruti Suzuki coming up with the Jimny soon, which is a 4-wheel-drive SUV, we expect Maruti Suzuki to price it in the range of the Thar RWD. So, customers will now have to ponder upon choosing one of the two, which is not the case right now. The launch of Jimny will change a lot of things for Thar, let’s wait and watch how Mahindra responds to that.
