Goa waves off registration charges for electric 2-wheelers

Written by Nizam Shaikh

The Government of Goa is promoting the sales of electric two-wheelers by offering incentives for electric two-wheeler owners in the form of waving-off the registration charges. This move will encourage more people to adopt electric two-wheelers in the state as the cost of the electric two-wheeler will be lower by 5%. But more importantly, the new incentive will help cut down 5,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year and also remove 10% of the internal combustion engine two-wheelers from the streets.

Clean Mobility Initiative

Implementing the new scheme is the Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL) which is also working on the development and employment of two-wheeler chargers that work on solar energy making the sustainability quotient stronger. The Government is also working on installing a public charging system throughout the state of Goa to minimise the range anxiety of electric two-wheeler users. It is also reported that CESL is leading several initiatives to promote faster EV adoption under the national e-mobility programme.

Electric Vehicle Charging in Goa

Currently, three high-capacity combo EV chargers with the capacity of 122-150 kW that support Type 2 AC standards, are present and are able to charge long-range electric vehicles such as the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV. The Government also plans to install Bharat Standard DC001 EV chargers next to the high-capacity chargers to enable moderate range EVs such as the Mahindra e-Verito and Tata Tigor. The installation of these Bharat Standard DC001 EV chargers set to complete this month.

Incentives

The Government plans to make available cash incentive similar to a buyback programme that will enable owners to switch from their petrol vehicles to electric vehicles with ease. No registration charge means an automatic 5% discount on the electric two-wheelers, government subsidy that further lowers the acquiring cost of the electric vehicle and the new scrappage policy in line with the Union Budget 2021.
