‘Classic Legend’ is well-known for reviving the Jawa brand and now plans to resurrect BSA Motorcycles. In 2020, we reported that Mahindra’s top boss Anand Mahindra plans to invest in the BSA motorcycles. Mahindra-owned Classic Legends is also reportedly working on a 650cc bike. The new bike is likely to make its appearance under the BSA brand name.
BSA, which stands for Birmingham Small Arms company, has a rich heritage in motorcycling history. The brand was founded in 1861 in Small Heath, Birmingham and manufactured arms and ammunition. The brand later started manufacturing bicycles and later transitioned into building motorcycles. Before ceasing production and filing bankruptcy, BSA was the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer between the 1950s and the 1970s.
Mahindra plans to invest in the company and restart motorcycle production as soon as mid-2021. But we suspect Mahindra could have postponed the plans a little further due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mahindra already acquired the BSA brand back in 2016 and now plans to build a research facility in Banbury, UK. New reports suggest that the brand is already working on a 650cc twin-cylinder motorcycle, making its global debut soon.
According to reports, boffins at Classic Legends have already developed a new 650cc motorcycle engine. Furthermore, the engine is in the advanced stages of testing and development at the Pithampur plant. Reports suggest that Classic Legends could showcase the BSA motorcycle at the EICMA 2021 later this year if plans advance normally.
Classic Legends has also acquired a funding grant of around GBP 4.6 Million to develop electric bikes. The British Government is also optimistic that the funding will help create 255 new employment opportunities. The electric range of motorcycle from Mahindra is likely to follow the internal combustion power motorcycles.
