350 National Highways to have ETC by December

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways has mentioned that as many as 350 Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) booths will be operational by 31st December, 2014. This move is expected to result into savings worth Rs. 34,000 crore.

This savings is broken up into direct savings of up to Rs. 27,000 crore and savings on fuel worth Rs. 7,000 crore. On the Mumbai – Delhi highway, Rs. 1,200 crore worth of fuel will be saved annually post the installation of ETC. As of now, there are 18 toll plazas on this route and it takes up to 10 minutes to pay toll at each junction which results in 180 minutes of time loss.

But what about cars who do not have an RFID tags? Will they still have to pay the amount manually? Or the government will come up with a solution for this?
