25 BMW electric car models by 2023

BMW has accelerated its plans of launching electrified vehicles by two years that means 25 electric vehicles will be launched by the year 2023. As a part of their NEXTGen, BMW will debut the Vision M NEXT and the Vision DC Roadster as next-generation e-mobility solutions. Since the launch of the i3 in the year 2013, the brand has not launched any electric vehicles and now it plans to bring a number of all-electric models, over the next few years.

Within two years the company plans to launch five electric vehicles including the i3 with more than 150,000 units built to date, the fully electric Mini which will start production this year at the Oxford manufacturing facility, followed by the fully-electric BMW iX3 built in Shenyang, China in 2020, the BMW iNEXT in 2021 manufactured at the Dingolfing plant in Germany and the BMW i4 from the production plant in Munich.

Pioneering Electromobility

BMW Group has an extensive fleet of plug-in hybrids and they were presented this year at the Geneva Motor Show with the updated, electric range plug-in hybrids of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 7 Series, BMW X5 alongside the new BMW X1 plug-in hybrid. BMW has also updated, this year, the X1 with a long wheelbase version exclusive for the Chinese markets.

BMW eDrive Zone

The eDrive zones function will be made available on all BMW plug-in hybrid models from 2020. As the car enters a dedicated green zone it will automatically switch to pure electric by identifying the zone through a geofencing system. In this way, the BMW plug-in hybrids will earn the rights to enter these ‘Green Zones’ as they behave like fully electric vehicles inside the geofenced area.

BMW already has fully electric as well as plug-in hybrid cars and the fuel consumption and carbon emission for the same is given below:-

  • i3 and i3s which are available for sale feature an AC Electric Motor; 42 kWh high voltage battery that can be fully charged in under 6 hours and comes with a rear-wheel drive. The eDrive motor can generate 170 HP of power and 249.4 Nm of torque coupled to a 120 Ah battery. The i3 (120Ah) has a power consumption of 13.1 kWh/100 km and CO2 emissions 0 g/km.
  • The BMW i3s (120Ah) has a power consumption combined 14.6-14.0 kWh/100 km with 0 g/km CO2 emissions.
  • The BMW 330e the PHEV features an electric motor which provides a range of almost 66 km and a 0-100 kmph acceleration in 6.5 seconds. The electric powertrain works in combination with the twin turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine and the car has a fuel consumption figure of – combined: 1.9-1.6 l/100 km; power consumption combined: 15.4-14.8 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 43-37 g/km.
  • The BMW 745e features a PHEV 286 horsepower six-cylinder inline engine combined with a 113 horsepower electric engine, for a total system output of 394 horsepower with a combined fuel consumption of 2.3 – 2.1 l/100 km with combined power consumption of 15.6 – 15.1 kWh/100 km / 15.7 and combined CO2 emissions from fuel at 52 – 48 g/km.
  • The BMW xDrive 45e with plug-in hybrid drive combines an in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW eDrive technology producing an increased output of 394 hp, electrically powered range now up to 80 kilometres. The fuel consumption combined is 2.1 l/100 km with power consumption combined at 23.0 kWh/100 km and CO2 emissions combined are at 49 g/km (provisional figures).
  • BMW xDrive 30e consists of a 4-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric motor.  The joint system produces an output of 252 HP which can be increased by up to 41 HP by temporary use of the electric motor’s peak output and can be electrically powered for nearly up to 50 km. The fuel consumption combined: from 2.4 l/100 km; power consumption combined: from 22.7 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: from 56 g/km (provisional figures).
  • The BMW xDrive 25Le gets a 1.5-litre petrol engine at the front axle is mated to a six-speed integrated manual/automatic gearbox and churns out a maximum power output of 134 HP with peak torque clocking in at 220 Nm. The electric motor at the rear axle, on the other hand, produces power up to 94 HP and can instantaneously deliver a peak torque of 165 Nm at start-up. The fuel consumption combined: 1.3 l/100 km; power consumption combined: 15.6 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 31 g/km.
  • The BMW 530e iPerformance is powered by a 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder, 16-valve 180 HP engine and eDrive 111 HP electric motor with a total power output of 248 HP. The fuel consumption combined: 1.8-1.6 l/100 km; power consumption combined: 14.5-13.6 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 41-36 g/km.
  • The BMW 225 xe iPerformace active tourer features a BMW eDrive technology from BMW EfficientDynamics with a range of up to 41 kilometres in the purely electric mode. The fuel consumption combined: 2.5-2.3 l/100 km; power consumption combined: 13.7-13.4 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 57-52 g/km
