2024 Tata Curvv could get a diesel DCA variant, can it rival the Creta?

Tata Motors has revealed production version of the Curvv through various images and videos, and it’s generating quite a buzz. The Curvv is a unique SUV-coupe that aims to compete in the highly competitive C-segment SUV market. One of its standout features is the availability of a diesel engine option, which sets it apart from its rival the Citroen Basalt and also Korean rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

Diesel Engine Comparison

The Tata Curvv will be powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine borrowed from the Nexon sub-4 metre SUV. Here’s how it stacks up against the Creta and Seltos:

  • Tata Curvv:
    • Engine: 1.5-litre, four-cylinder
    • Power: 115 PS
    • Torque: 260 Nm
    • Transmission: 6-speed manual (expect an automatic option too)
  • Hyundai Creta / Kia Seltos:
    • Engine: 1.5-litre, four-cylinder
    • Power: 116 PS
    • Torque: 250 Nm
    • Transmission Options: 6-speed MT / 6-speed iMT / 6-speed AT (iMT in Seltos only)

While the Seltos and Creta have a slight power advantage (1 PS more), the Curvv compensates with 10 Nm more torque. Tata has confirmed the diesel engine will initially come with a manual transmission, but an automatic variant is likely to follow.

Expected Price and Rivals

The Tata Curvv is set to launch as an electric vehicle (EV) first, followed by the internal combustion engine (ICE) version. The ICE Curvv is expected to start around INR 8-9 lakh (ex-showroom). Apart from the Creta and Seltos, it will compete with other formidable contenders like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and MG Astor. The Citroen Basalt however, will be its prime rival since they both have created a new SUV-Coupe segment.
