Mahindra SUVs is set to launch the much-anticipated 5-door Thar dubbed as Thar Armada exclusively in 4×4 variants. Reports suggest that the Armada suffix will be used to differentiate between the 3-door and 5-door Thar variants.
A New Off-Road Champion?
The Thar Armada is expected to elevate the standards of lifestyle off-road vehicles in India building on the success of the Thar. Since the introduction of the 3-Door Thar in 2020, Mahindra has dominated this segment, facing competition mainly from Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. The Thar Armada is anticipated to debut exclusively in the 4X4 configuration, with no RWD variant available at launch. However, Mahindra plans to introduce the 4X2 Thar Armada (RWD) at a later stage.
Thar Armada Launch Timeline
Speculations suggest that the Thar Armada is likely to be unveiled around August 15, 2024, mirroring Mahindra’s previous launch patterns. Similar to the current 3-Door Thar, the top-tier Thar Armada variant is expected to feature a limited-slip rear differential to enhance off-road capabilities. All variants are anticipated to come equipped with a standard 4X4 transfer case at launch. A soft top variant might also be in the works however, there has been no confirmation on the same.
Engine and Performance
Potential engine options for the Thar Armada include a 1.5-liter diesel, a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, and a 2.2-liter diesel engine mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual gearbox. The petrol engine will deliver 200bhp with 370Nm or 380Nm of torque, while the diesel engine will produce 172bhp with 370Nm or 400Nm of torque.
Thar Armada Design and Features
Externally, the Thar Armada will feature several design updates, including a rear wheel arch resembling the front arches, a fixed metallic roof, new alloy wheels, and rear doors for added convenience. The interior of the Thar Armada is expected to be in a theme of beige and black as compared to all black in the 3-Door Thar. The Thar Armada is expected to carve a unique niche in the Indian market, offering a compelling combination of off-road capability, practicality, and modern features.
