Mahindra is just about to launch the Thar 4×2. However, ahead of its official launch, more details have been leaked.
In a bid to lower the base prices of the lifestyle SUV, Mahindra will be launching he 4×2 versions of the Thar.
As per the leaked document, the 4×4 variants will continue as it is, while there will be two new 4×2 variants. The 1.5 diesel will be offered in the manual transmission while the 2.0 petrol will be offered in the automatic configuration. In terms of features, the 4×2 variants will retain all those features on the 4×4. These include the 18-inch alloy wheels, electric ORVMs, fog lamps, black bumpers and others.
On the inside, the SUV will continue to get a touchscreen infotainment system with roof-mounted speakers, cruise control and ESP. The 4×2 variants will get a cubby hole in place of the low-range gear lever.
Mahindra will also be offering two new colour options for the Thar. These include the Everest White and the Blazing Bronze.
In terms of engines, Mahindra will equip the Thar 4X2 with a 1.5-litre diesel engine and retain the same existing 2.0-litre turbo petrol.
The 1.5-litre unit currently does duty on the XUV300 and the Marazzo. While both these cars are front wheel drive, the Thar will get rear wheel drive. This engine will be paired with a manual gearbox. Despite the smaller size, the torque output of the engine is comparable to the larger 2.2L diesel engine. The 1.5-litre engine develops 121 BHP @ 3,500 rpm and a peak torque of 300 Nm @ 1,750-2,500 rpm.
The 2.0-litre petrol unit is the same as the current offering. It makes 150 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 300 Nm @ 1,250-3,000 rpm for the MT and 320 Nm @ 1,500-3,000 rpm for the automatic version.
