2022 Toyota Innova Crysta & Fortuner could get diesel hybrid engine

Toyota is planning to upgrade the powertrains on the Innova Crysta and the Fortuner in India. Sources suggest that Toyota could be developing an electrified diesel powertrain. This could be in line with the increasing emission norm policies as well as the push towards electrification.

Toyota Hybrid Engines

Sources suggest that the Toyota GD series diesel engines will gain the hybrid system. The 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV and the 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV are likely to be the ones to features the hybrid powertrain. The 2GD-FTV engine powers the Innova Crysta while the 1GD-FTV powers the Fortuner. The brand has codenamed the Hybrid engine ‘188D’ and the powertrains are likely to launch in the Q2 of 2022. While the brand could be taking steps to be ready for further emission standards. In the southeast Asian markets, Hybrid engine vehicles also attract heavy tax advantages. For example, in the Thailand market, Fortuner attracts 20% excise tax but, a hybrid model can cut it down by half.

Current Powertrain in India

In the Indian market, the Toyota Innova Crysta comes with a BS6 compliant 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The turbocharged oil motor pumps out 150 PS of power and 343 Nm of torque. The engine comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed sequential-shift automatic transmission. The automatic transmission option produces 360 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel unit makes 204 HP of power and 500 Nm of torque. The engine comes with a 6-speed manual or an automatic option.

Currently, Toyota in India is planning to upgrade its sedan portfolio by introducing the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The brand will be rebadging the Ciaz, under the Maruti Suzuki-Toyota partnership where the brand is rebadging vehicles such as the Glanza and Urban Cruiser. Speculation is that Toyota will rebrand the Ciaz as the Belta in the Indian market and replace the Yaris sedan.
