Skoda is planning to launch a new sedan in the Indian market. In a Tweet, Zac Hollis, Director – Sales, Service & Marketing, revealed that the brand would not be introducing a new-generation Rapid. Instead, Skoda will launch a new bigger sedan in India. Now, things are still unclear if the new sedan will replace the Rapid or sell alongside the popular car. But, here are a few things that the new car is likely to be better than the current Rapid.
Skoda recently filed patents for the Slavia name, which leads us to believe that the upcoming sedan will come with the Slavia name in the Indian market. It is also important to note that the name was first used in 1895 by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement. The Czech founders named their first production Bicycle ‘SLAVIA’. The brand also uses the Slavia moniker for the 7th Student Concept car, unveiled in SKODA Academy in Mladá Boleslav.
The same tweet that confirms, Skoda will launch a new sedan instead of upgrading the Rapid to the next generation also reveals its platform details. Zac Hollis reveals that the upcoming sedan will underpin the MQB-A0-IN platform. The platform is the localised version of the MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform which underpins a slew of Volkswagen Group cars. The new platform also underpins the upcoming Kushaq SUV in the Indian market.
The Slavia is likely to measure close to 4480 mm in length and come with a wheelbase measuring 2651 mm. The new sedan is also likely to be 50mm wider than the Rapid. The sedan will also come with features in both comfort and convenience as well as the safety department. Notable features include a new-generation Skoda grille, LED headlamps and taillamps, connected car tech etc.
Skoda is likely to offer the sedan with two engine options. The new sedan will come with Volkswagen’s EA211 engine featuring a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that produces 115 Hp of power. The second options are likely to be a 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine that makes 150 Hp of power. The four-cylinder engine also makes 250 Nm of torque. Both engines also power the Kushaq SUV in India.
The new Skoda sedan is likely to make its debut in India in 2022. Will it replace the Rapid is still a question, but Skoda will position the car above the current Skoda Rapid.
