The Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster has finally arrived in its new form. This time, the car gets a complete overhaul as it gets a new platform underneath. And hence the latest update gets a new design, equipment and technology. Mercedes-Benz has also brought up the fabric roof alongside this; the car now gets a 2+2 seating layout. AWD and rear-axle steering are now standard across the trims. This rear-axle steering is quite useful, especially when doing high-speed cornering. In fact, the new platform also makes the car longer in terms of wheelbase, by 154 mm.
At the very first glance, onlookers will appreciate the signature Panamericana-grille which is neatly integrated with sharp-looking LED headlamps. The car continues with its extra elongated bonnet that matches the windshield perfectly. Mercedes is providing two wheel size options, standard 19-inch alloys with an option to upgrade them to 21-inches. The use of a fabric roof helps reduce the weight by almost 21 kgs compared to the previous generation’s metallic roof. This fabric roof is retractable in less than 15 seconds.
Being a Mercedes, customers will have no room for complaint in this department. The roadster gets all the latest kit and equipment as per 2021 standards. The key highlights include a large 11.9-inch vertically-stacked touchscreen infotainment unit,12.3-inch LCD driver’s display, heads-up display, AMG twin-spoke steering wheel, turbine-style AC vents, electrically-adjustable sports seats and plenty of other equipment.
The equipped engine is a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 motor. The performance output figure varies from trim to trim. The base SL 55 model’s engine makes 469 BHP and 700 Nm. Meanwhile, the top-spec SL 63’s engine has performance figures rated at 577 BHP and 800 Nm. The gearbox is common across the range, which is a 9-speed automatic that sends power to all four wheels. The German carmaker claims that the SL Roadster can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 315 kmph.
Owing to its popularity among the high mindshare clientele, Mercedes-Benz is also likely to bring the new Mercedes-AMG SL to the Indian market. However, the brand has not yet revealed when the SL Roadster will make its debut in India.
