Written by Nizam Shaikh

Yamaha has introduced the 2021 MT-09 SP edition at the price of USD 10,999 MSRP and comes with an exclusive special edition paint theme, a new cruise control system, a tuned CP3 triple engine that builds the twisting force earlier than standard and premium KYB and Öhlins suspension etc. The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP edition also comes with lightweight parts such as Yamaha-exclusive spin forged lightweight alloy wheels, but other added equipment means the SP is actually 2 pounds heavier than the standard.

The SP edition comes with a special paint theme inspired from the Supersport flagship, the Yamaha YZF-R1M and comes with Black, Blue and Silver shades. The running gear has been updated with premium KYB front suspension with adjustment on both the sides for compression and rebound damping, high and low-speed compression damping, DLC coating on the inner tubes and a remote preload-adjustable, Öhlins shock absorber on the rear.

The 2021 MT-09 SP also features a new Cruise Control system that can be set above the speed of 50 kmph over 4th gear or higher. The cruise speed can be controlled from the left-hand side handlebar switch with increments of 2 kmph. The Cruise control is cancelled when the rider uses the brake, clutch or the throttle. The rider can also resume the cruise to the preset speed by using the dedicated ‘Resume’ function.

In the engine department, the 2021 model comes with a lot of changes such as a new downdraft intake system, higher compression ratio, redesigned and optimised camshafts, crankshaft, crankcase, pistons and connecting rods, new design injector position, fracture-split forged connecting rods and direct-plated ceramic-composite cylinder bores along with a new dual split exhaust system. The Euro5 compliant 890cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder, four-valve-per-cylinder DOHC engine produces 119 PS of power and 93 Nm of torque matched to a 6-speed transmission.

In its standard avatar, the MT-09 is priced from USD 9,399 MSRP, deliveries on the MT-09 SP edition is expected to commence from March 2021.
