2021 Yamaha MT-07 gets a makeover, set to rival Triumph Trident 660

Yamaha has updated the brand’s much-popular naked streetfighter the MT-07 in the international market. The updated motorcycle comes with a Euro5 emissions-compliant engine with redesigned exhaust outlets, a new Engine Control Unit and the same crossplane parallel-twin cylinder architecture from the predecessor. The brand has also tweaked the 2021 MT-07 in the design department to better compete with the Triumph Trident 660, which is now its direct competitor. 

The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 features a new three-part headlight setup with LED lighting and black finished inserts to give it a dark and sinister look. The handlebar has also been slightly widened to give the motorcycle more edge in the handling department and the tank design has also been changed which now integrates aero winglets and better incorporates the aero ducts that flank the tank. The Yamaha MT-07 features two-up seats in a split design similar to the predecessor. The similarities also continue toward the rear of the motorcycle where the tail cowl comes with blade-like aero ducts and a similar-looking tail lamp unit. 

The 2021 model also comes with larger 298mm diameter front discs for extra stopping power as compared to the 282mm front discs on the predecessor. While the contact patch on the motorcycle remains the same the new motorcycle comes with a new tyre OEM that boasts enhanced grip and feel. The LCD dash unit has also been upgraded and now comes with a new multifunction negative-display unit with a black background and white readouts with Red colour indication for 10k – 12k RPMs. The new LCD display features a larger display for the clock, current gear, trip/odometers and tachometer. 

The 2021 Yamaha MT-07 is powered by a CP2 series Euro5 compliant 689cc liquid-cooled in-line two-cylinder with 270-degree of crank angle from the Yamaha’s Crossplane Concept which has been now integrated 2-into-1 exhaust pipes and muffler. The fuel injection system has also been optimised and comes with optimised valve seats, differently cut angles for the dog gears that improves the gearshift feel, a repositioned catalytic converter which now sits closer to the engine header and the system now also incorporates an Oxygen sensor.
