Mercedes-Benz at the Auto Shanghai 2021 revealed another China-specific model. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class with a smaller displacement engine to evade steep taxes on high-displacement cars in the People’s Republic.
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class comes with a twin-turbo V8 motor, and recently the brand teased a V12 engine. But now, a third engine option will power the S-Class in China. The engine will be a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol that makes 362 Hp of power and 500 Nm of torque. The figures are similar to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class S450 4Matic. The engine also features an EQ boost, an electrified system that enables the luxe saloon to sprint from 0-100 kmph in just 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 kmph.
The Mercedes-Maybach with the smaller capacity engine will only be available in the Chinese market, at least for now. But speculations are that the smaller, more efficient engine could make its way to other emission sensitive markets soon. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class with a six-cylinder engine in China comes with a price tag of USD 226,300. The brand also showcased the EQA, EQB, EQS, CLA facelift and C-Class L at the Auto Shanghai Show 2021.
Even if the engine is smaller than other markets, the Maybach S-Class is still big on features. The luxury car comes with power-assist doors, 12.8-inch learn-capable MBUX infotainment system, rear seats with 43.5 degrees recline angle ability and massage function, 23-degree forward recline on the front passenger seat, a full-length centre console, Burmester Sound System, 263 LED ambient light system, active road noise compensation, automatic seat belt extender, Digital Light headlamps with 1.3 million micro-mirrors, adaptive rear lighting, active suspension, rear-axle steering and Drive Pilot.
Mercedes-Maybach in the Indian market recently announced that the brand would assemble the S 580 variant at the Chakan Manufacturing Facility in Pune. The luxury saloon is assembled alongside the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The locally produced Mercedes-Maybach comes with a price tag of INR 2.2 crore ex-showroom.
