2020 Mahindra Thar is safer than Jeep Wrangler, 4-star Global NCAP crash test rating

The all-new Mahindra Thar has garnered a 4-star rating on both adult as well as child safety. The Global NCAP, a charity organisation based in the UK that promotes crash testing and reporting of vehicles for emerging markets such as ours, under their SaferCarsForIndia initiative. 

The 2020 Mahindra Thar SUV has scored 12.52 points out of 17 points for the adult protection and 41.11 points out of 49 points in the child safety department. The 2020 Mahindra Thar was subjected to Front Offset Deformable Barrier at the speed of 64 kmph and the test car was equipped with front seatbelt pretensioners, driver and passenger frontal airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorage system, seat belt reminders and ABS. The 18-month old dummy child was seated in a BRITAX BABYSAFE child restraint system installed in the rearward facing position using ISOFIX anchorage points and a  support leg. The 3-year old child dummy was seated in a BRITAX DUO PLUS child restraint system installed using the vehicles ISOFIX anchorage point and top tether. 

According to Global NCAP, the all-new Mahindra Thar offers good protection to the head and neck of both the driver and passenger. While the car offers adequate protection to the chest area of the driver it showed good protection to the chest area of the passenger. The driver’s knees showed marginal protection while the passenger’s knees showed good and marginal protection. After the crash, the bodyshell was still rated as stable and it was capable of withstanding further loadings, however, the footrest area was rated unstable.

In the child protection department, the child restraint system with the ISOFIX anchorage and top tether on the forward-facing 3-year old child dummy was able to prevent excessive forward movement of the head during impact. The child restraint system on the 18-month old child in the rearward facing position installed with the ISOFIX base and support leg showed full protection to the child occupant. 

On the other hand, the 2019-2020 model year Jeep Wrangler was tested three times, once by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and twice by IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), the SUV had rolled on to its passenger side after striking the test barrier.
