2020 Mahindra Thar begins road testing, BIGGER than EVER!

The Thar is an icon in the Mahindra showrooms. Highlighting the roots of Mahindra as a car manufacturer, and it still is an eyeball magnet be it in the showrooms or on the road. However, the current Thar as per 2019 standards is quite a dated and unfinished product. It lacks safety features, basic features, and comes with shoddy fit & finish. Also, this current Thar would not meet the upcoming safety and emission norms either.

Hence, this is it. The all-new Thar. We all knew this was coming. Mahindra would most definitely never kill the Thar brand, and the all-new 2020 Thar is looking quite promising. While not much is seen, the new Thar is noticeably bigger, especially wider than ever.

At the moment, one can notice a similar soft canopy top, the rear hatch without the spare wheel mounted on it, conventional Mahindra tail lamps, flared wheel arches, basic tyres, a side step for the front passengers, steel wheels, larger ORVMs, and very limited visibility of the flat dashboard.

Powering the Thar is also going to be an all-new engine. This motor, obviously will be coupled to a 4WD transmission and this time, the engine will also be efficient. Expect the standard 2WD, 4WD H & 4WD L modes on the new Thar. The engine could get a 6-speed manual gearbox as well. For creature comforts, we can expect air-conditioning, MID, electric ORVMs, music system, seat adjustment, steering adjustment and some more basics.

The new Thar will surely spice things up in the market. Mahindra as far as we know is going to retain the design language, but make it feel more upmarket. Can the Jeep Wrangler design language be in sights? Why not… But Mahindra has to improve on the parts quality and on the sheet metal as well on the Thar which rusts very soon. A jugaad is what the current Thar is, and the new model as per 2020 standards will need to be flawless to make a mark for itself.
