The Honda City has been a segment defining sedan here in India. No matter what the competition has to offer, the Honda City always has had a loyal customer base and it also enjoys the best resale value compared to almost any other car on sale here in the Indian market. The 2020 Honda City is now bigger than ever, and picks up the fight against the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento and Toyota Yaris. Bookings are now open and the all-new City will be launched soon.
Till date, all the generations combined, Honda has sold more than 8 lakh units of the City here in India. The first generation Honda City came to our market between 1998 – 2003. This model took cues from the Honda Civic Ferio which was available in the international market and the City back then produced an impressive 106 HP of power which made it an instant hit. Honda sold 59,378 units of the 1st generation City sedan.
The 2nd generation model came to our market in 2003 and was known as the car with a ‘Centre Tank-Layout’. With a new 1.5L iDSI petrol engine and also offering the convenience of a CVT automatic, the engine produced 77 HP of power and it was offered ABS which was unheard of in the segment. With more than 1,77,742 units of the 2nd generation City sold in India, this car was way ahead of its time compared to competition.
The 3rd generation Honda City was launched in 2008 with total sales for this model crossing 1,92,939 units. This model brought the arrow-shot design to the market and had an new 1.5L i-VTEC petrol motor. With dual front airbags and ABS with EBD as standard features, this sedan focused on safety 11 years before it was made mandatory in the market. This model also became a segment benchmark and is still seen running on the streets very happily.
The 4th generation City was launched in 2014 and this was the first time Honda launched an all-new 1.5L i-DTEC diesel motor in India along with the 1.5L i-VTEC petrol. The petrol motor also came with a CVT automatic and this sedan delivered the best mileage compared to any other car in the segment. On sale till January 2020, the 4th generation City sedan managed sales of over 3.53 lakh in India making it the most successful City ever.
