Mahindra has finally launched the much-awaited all-new Thar in the Indian market at the starting price of INR 9.80 lakh ex-showroom, India. The bookings of the all-new Mahindra Thar is open through both physical and digital channels and customer deliveries are slated to begin from 1st November 2020. The 2020 Mahindra Thar will be available in two variants, starting INR 9.80 lakh AX and starting price of INR 12.49 lakh for the LX Series. The Thar is available in both Manual Transmission and Automatic Transmission choices on both the BS6 Petrol and Diesel engine options. The Mahindra Thar is offered in six exterior colours – Red Rage, Rocky Beige, Galaxy Grey, Aquamarine, Mystic Copper and Napoli Black.
The all-new Thar is offered in a dual trim concept – AX and LX. The AX is the Adventure series variant which comes with both petrol and diesel engine types, a fixed soft top and only a manual transmission option. The AX Standard comes only with a petrol manual option and fixed soft top while the AX optional trim comes with both the petrol and diesel options with only a manual gearbox and comes with a convertible soft top as well as a hardtop option only in the Diesel engine choice. The AX trim comes with 2+4 side-facing 2nd-row seats and 16-inch rims shod in All-Terrain tyres
The LX variant is the fully loaded option that comes with both petrol and diesel powertrains, an automatic gearbox available on both the petrol and diesel engines but only a manual transmission unit available on the diesel variant and no petrol manual is offered on the LX trim. The LX trim also features Convertible Soft Top (With Automatic Only) and Hard Top (With Manual & Automatic) options. It also offers larger 18-inch alloy wheels shod in All-Terrain tyres. The LX trim comes with 2+2 forward-facing 2nd-row seats and both the AX and the LX options come with the 4X4 driveline as standard.
The all-new 2nd generation Mahindra Thar is built around the 3rd generation chassis with typical body-on-ladder architecture and retains the marque’s iconic and timeless exterior design language that reverberates with the brand’s 70 years of rich off-road heritage. The result is four years of design and development and in terms of the design & styling, the all-new Thar is completely new. It features a rounded headlamp, LED daytime running lights incorporated into its large wheel arches, the iconic vertically slated grille, a muscular front apron, a long bonnet with power bulges and clean line to the sides.
On the inside, the 2020 Thar features water-resistant interiors with textures materials finished in black, a VIN plate incorporated in the dash fascia that also serves as an embellishment, a wide tunnel console that now houses the Low-Range shift selector, sporty front seats, reclinable rear seats, a centrally mounted drizzle resistant 17.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, roof-mounted speakers, on-board navigation, a first-in-class Adventure Statistics Display that showcases information such as engine speed, gear position, 4WD mode, pitch angle, roll angle, power and torque figures, compass heading and a G meter. The new Thar comes with analogue instruments complemented by a central MID and steering mounted controls.
The all-new Thar for the first time is powered by an all-new mStallion series 2.0-litre Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDi) four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine that makes 150 Bhp of power and 320 Nm for AT (300 Nm for MT) of torque. For diesel aficionados, the Thar is also offered in a mHawk series 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 130 Bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque. Both powertrains are matched to a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional 6-speed torque converter type automatic gearbox.
The Thar is not just a lifestyle vehicle but also a hardcore off-roading tool and features a 4X4 manual transfer case with a shift-on-fly electric driveline disconnect and a low crawl ratio of 42:1 with a 50:50 power split, as standard across all variants. The Thar also comes with an independent double wishbone front suspension with coil-over damper and stabiliser bar, a multilink solid rear axle with coil-spring suspension and stabiliser bar on the rear, Mechanical Locking Differential on the rear axle, Brake Locking Differential, aggressive 41.8-degree approach angle, 36.8-degree departure angle, 27-degree ramp over angle, 650mm of water fording ability, 226mm of unladen ground clearance and the largest all-terrain tyres in the segment, that enable the Thar to crawl out of the toughest obstacles.
The all-new Mahindra Thar also comes with safety features such as a Crash-Safety compliant Body-shell, 3-point seatbelts on all seats, dual airbags, ABS with EBD & Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Program with Roll-over Mitigation, Hill-Hold and Hill Descent Control, Panic Braking Signal, Snow Chain Provision for Tyres, an integrated roll cage, Tyretronics (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), Tyre Direction Monitoring System, Parking Sensors and ISOFIX Child Seat Anchorage system on the rear seats.
