2020 all-new Hyundai i20 starts road testing in India

The next-generation Hyundai i20 has been spotted testing near Chennai, India and when launched this will be the third generation i20. The test mule was heavily camouflaged and the new car is expected to get a complete makeover keeping in check with the company’s trend. Overall the silhouette of the hatchback remains the same with a wide and low body and a lot of similarities to the current model. The rear quarter glass seems to have been removed and the ORVMs appears to be redesigned. The car is expected to get LED headlights and tails lights.

On the interiors, the hatchback is likely to feature a floating touch screen infotainment system, new seats, new steering wheel and instrument cluster which could be shared from the Hyundai Venue. It is also speculated that Hyundai will bring new connectivity features and BlueLink, on the car. The dashboard is also expected to be redesigned and the hatchback could get new segment first features too.

In the mechanical department, the new i20 is expected to be on the same platform as the current car and is likely to get the same engines but upgraded to BSVI standards. Currently, the car has two engines which are as follows:-

Petrol – 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT that produces 83 PS of power and 114.7 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed manual or an automatic CVT gearbox.

Diesel – 1.4-litre U2 CRDi engine that produces 90 PS of power and 219.6 Nm of torque coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission.

The new 1.0-litre T-GDI engine is being developed in India for the Hyundai Venue and it could be offered on the next generation i20. The 1.0-litre T-GDI engine comes in two states of tune and produces 100 PS and 120 PS of power. Hyundai has invested a lot of money for localisation of this engine and is likely to use it on other models. The next generation Hyundai i20 is expected to launch around July next year and we expect it to make a debut at the Auto Expo 2020 in India.
