Honda has revealed a teaser image of two electric sports cars that will join the company’s future EV lineup. The teaser image shows the cars still under wraps. Rumours are one of the two cars will be the successor of the Honda NSX sports car. The other vehicle has a less aggressive design and could be a grand tourer.
Honda says it will allocate approximately JPY 5 trillion in electrification and software technologies. This investment will further accelerate the company’s electrification plans. Thus, Honda says the overall R&D budget for this period will be approximately JPY 8 trillion.
Honda plans to launch 30 EV models globally by 2030. The company also plans to produce more than 2 million units annually. The three major markets for Honda are North America, China and Japan. Honda says it will introduce products according to the market characteristics of each region in a phased manner. The company plans to build two dedicated EV plants in China and a dedicated EV production line in North America. The new EV lineup will have cars from commercial use mini-EVs to flagship-class models.
The Japanese manufacturer also plans to achieve net carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050. To achieve this, Honda says it needs a multi-dimensional approach and “not a mere replacing of engines with batteries”. Hence, the company will also use the allotted budget to develop swappable batteries and hydrogen powertrains. Honda also plans to sell EVs with solid-state batteries by the second half of the decade.
Launched in 2021, the Honda NSX Type S was the final edition of the hybrid sports car. The performance car was made in the USA and had a limited-production run of just 350 units.
Powering the car was a 3.5-litre V6 electric hybrid engine. The machine’s maximum power was 600 HP and a maximum torque output of 667 Nm. Honda utilised a new turbocharger from the NSX GT3 race car for additional power. The gearbox was a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic.
