The car shares its engine with the Jeep Compass SUV and the new upcoming Jeep Compass Trailhawk which will be an off-road focused SUV will be the first model in India to be powered by a BSVI compliant 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine. The Tata Harrier is expected to use the same engine provided by FCA for its BSVI update.

According to a media report, both the Jeep and Tata SUVs were spotted together being tested in camouflage covers. The Jeep in the BSVI update is expected to generate a power output of 173 HP while the Harrier will also see an upgrade in power around the 170 HP mark. As far as the transmission is concerned, both the Tata and Jeep share the same 6-speed manual gearbox developed by FCA, but they both have their own automatic gearboxes where Tata will be sourcing the torque converter type 6-speed unit from Hyundai and Jeep will use a 9-speed torque converter type on its Compass Trailhawk.

The current Harrier is powered by an in-line, 4-cylinder, 2.0-litre, turbocharged, Kryotec engine which produces 140 HP of power and 350 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The powertrain on the Jeep Compass is the same 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine which produces 173 HP of power and 350 Nm of torque coupled to a 6-speed manual.

The exterior dimensions on the Harrier measure in at 4598mm in length, 1895mm in width, 1706mm in height and a wheelbase of 2741mm. On the other hand the Jeep compass measures at 4395mm in length, 1818mm in width, 1640mm in height with a wheelbase of 2636mm.

While Tata upgrades the Harrier to a BSVI compliant engine, the company may discontinue the smaller 1.05-litre three-cylinder Revotorq engines found on the Tiago and Tigor models post BSVI roll-out. Also, this new 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine which will see a big bump in power output on the Harrier, from 140 HP to 170 HP, the same engine will be used in the 7-seater Buzzard SUV as well.
