Volkswagen GTI performance cars coming to India?

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Volkswagen could be evaluating to bring its performance-oriented GTI cars back to the Indian market. The German premium car manufacturer introduced the VW Polo GTI in limited numbers in India back in 2016. The three-door Volkswagen Polo GTI still has a huge cult in India and enjoys an exceptional residual value, due to its exclusivity.

Volkswagen GTI to come Via CBU Route?

According to media reports, the brand is planning to bring back the GTI to India in small batches. However, it is not yet clear if Volkswagen will bring back the Polo GTI or the larger Golf GTI to India. Whichever, it may be, the car is likely to attract a heavy import fee. This will make its price quite high and also limited only to people with high purchase power. Also, the Golf GTI is nearly 30% more expensive than the Polo GTI in the international markets.

Volkswagen Polo GTI – Powertrain and Performance

In the international market, Volkswagen’s Polo GTI in its latest-generation made debut in 2021. The hot-hatchback came with a new features inside-out as well as new light signatures, new styling and technologies. Powering the 2021 Polo GTI is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. The four-cylinder motor makes 207 Hp of power and comes with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The engine is capable of accelerating the Polo GTI from 0-100 kmph in just 6.5 seconds. While the Golf GTI too uses the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, but the motor produces 245 Hp of power.

If the Polo GTI comes to India in its latest-generation, the hatchback will bring I.Q Lights with Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). The car will also come with a Digital Cockpit Pro, animated brake light and integrated dynamic indicators etc. The hatch will also come with sporty low-profile tyres on 17-inch alloy wheels. Also, sporty bumpers and LED lightbar illuminated radiator grille will be offered on the Polo GTI.

Volkswagen has lined up the ID.4 all-electric car to be launched in 2024-25, and the brand reveals that it will be the only car for the year. This leads us to believe that the VW GTI model is likely to come only after April 2025.
