Tata Punch micro-SUV could get a turbo-petrol engine

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Tata could be planning to launch a new engine variant of the Punch SUV in the Indian market. Recent reports have suggested that the Tata Punch SUV will come with a new turbocharged petrol engine. Sources reveal that the new engine variant will come with the Accomplished and Creative trims only. The brand currently retails four variants on the Tata Punch, of which the Accomplished and Creative are the higher-spec versions. The new variants are likely to arrive in the market by February or March 2022.

Tata Punch – Powertrain Details

Currently, the Tata Punch SUV comes with a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. The petrol motor comes with the brand’s latest Dyna-Pro technology. The new Dyna-Pro technology features a ram-air intake system that helps improve both the performance and efficiency of the SUV. The BS6 compliant engine produces 86 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque and comes with a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox options.

Tata Punch – Turbo-Petrol Speculations

The Tata Altroz in the recent past made its debut with a new 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine. The turbo-petrol motor produces 110 PS of power and 140 Nm of torque. The new engine comes with a 5- speed manual gearbox and no automatic gearbox option. Tata is likely to use the same engine and gearbox combination for the Punch turbo. The Punch already comes with an industry-first ‘Traction Pro’ system that helps the SUV traverse through multiple off-road situations. The Punch also comes with Engine Drive Modes – City & Eco, and the new turbo-petrol variant is also likely to come with a new ‘Sports Mode,’ similar to the Tata Altroz hot hatchback.

Other Updates

Other than the new engine, the Tata Punch is likely to remain unchanged. The SUV will carry forward with the same design language and styling. In addition to this, Tata is likely to offer new colours and badging to differentiate the turbo-petrol model from the standard. Of course, the turbo variant will also command a premium price.
