MG Comet based electric SUV for India – What to expect?

Recently, JSW and SAIC Motor joined hands to form JSW MG Motor India PVT LTD. The new joint venture plans to capitalise opportunities in the Indian market especially in the electric mobility segment. Together, JSW and MG not only plan to develop a robust automotive ecosystem but also create employment opportunities in India.

Baojun Yep to become MG’s Third EV in India?

In the past, MG also revealed that the brand plans to introduce its third EV product for India. Now, a media report suggests that the new EV is likely to be based on the existing MG Comet EV. But is likely to come in a family-friendly five-door avatar. Speculation is that the new MG EV likely to be the rebadged 5-door derivative of the Baojun Yep 3-door EV, which is on sale in China. In the Chinese market, the Baojun Yep retail at around CNY 100,000 which roughly converts to around INR 11 lakh.

MG Comet based electric SUV – Technical Details

The 5-door Baojun Yep is likely to come with spacious interiors for five passengers which is what Indian families demand the most. Also, the all-electric vehicle is likely to be 3,996 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width and 1,726 mm in height. The SUV is likely to come with a wheelbase of 2,560 mm and a ground clearance of around 150mm. Powering the MG-badged Baojun Yep is likely to be a 75 kW electric motor with a large battery capable of returning a range of around 400 km on a single charge. Also, the EV is likely to offer both AC and DC fast charging.

What Will be the Name?

In the recent past, MG filed trademarks for the Excelor moniker. Is the future MG electric vehicle come with the Excelor name? Well, the brand is likely to reveal its third EV close to the 2024 festive season and more details of the same are likely to arrive closer to its launch. Currently, MG Motor India retails the MG ZS EV and the MG Comet in its electric vehicle portfolio.
