Maruti Suzuki Swift was one of the best selling cars of 2020 in India

Maruti Suzuki Swift is the country’s most sold car in the past 6 months according to data released by JATO Dynamics. Unsurprisingly, 7 of the 10 highest selling cars in the past 6 months have been from Maruti Suzuki.

With a monthly average of 15,798 units sold, Swift is on the first position followed by WagonR with 14,446 units and on the third is the Alto 800 selling around 14,461 units. The interesting takeaway point from this analysis is that the Creta is selling about 11,480 units per month and stood on the 5th position after Baleno on 4th. The SUV segment is dominated by the South Korea carmakers Kia and Hyundai, with Seltos selling at around 8,871 units on average per month and stood on the 9th position. The other Hyundai in the list is Grand i10 Nios with an average of 9,380 units of monthly average sale. With the launch of the new generation Hyundai i20, it is expected to be in the top 10 list soon.

The third-generation Swift is powered by a 1.2-litre VVT (Variable Valve Timing) naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 84 HP of power and 115 Nm of torque. The 0-100 kmph timing is around 11.96 seconds making it a quicker car than the previous generation which had a timing of 14.24 seconds. In the Swift, there are two gearboxes on the offer; a 5-speed manual and an AMT (Automatic Manual Transmission). Currently, there is no option of a diesel engine in any of the Maruti Suzuki cars, though there are rumours that the Japanese carmaker will introduce its BS6-compliant diesel motors by the end of next year. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Vitara Brezza are likely to be the first cars to get the diesel motor.

Currently, there are 7 variants of the Swift on sale, starting from the base trim, LXi priced at INR 5.19 lakhs with the price of the top-spec ZXi Plus AMT going all the way up to INR 8.02 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi). The Swift could soon be launched with the DualJet engine, which powers the Baleno. This engine gets a mild hybrid system coupled with sensors for precise fuel injection and thus improves the fuel efficiency to a great extent.
