The India-spec Maruti Suzuki Ignis received its latest GNCAP rating.  In the recent test, the hatchback got a 1-star rating overall under the new and upgraded Global NCAP crash test protocol for India. The high-riding hatchback received poor scores for both the side impact and child protection tests as well.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Crash Test Ratings

Adult Protection

Under the new testing protocols, Maruti Suzuki Ignis received a 1-star rating overall. The hatchback scored 16.48 points in the adult occupant protection test out of an overall 34 points. GNCAP flagged that the protection to the driver’s and passenger’s head and neck was good. Meanwhile, the driver’s chest showed weak protection, and the passenger’s chest showed adequate protection.

The testers also flagged the driver’s and passenger’s knees as marginal protection. This was because they could come in contact with dangerous structures behind the dashboard. Meanwhile, GNCAP rated Ignis’ body shell as unstable and incapable of withstanding further loadings. These findings are pretty much in line with the crash test of the pre-facelift 2019 Ignis. This particular model was previously tested for the African market by Global NCAP. At that time the hatchback received an average 3-star rating. Noteworthy to mention, it did not undergo the tests for side impact, safety assist systems or pedestrian protection.

As per the new testing procedure, Ignis scored 6.91 points out of a possible 17. GNCAP noted that the driver’s head protection was weak, chest protection was poor, abdomen protection was adequate and pelvis protection was good. Meanwhile, Ignis did not undergo the new side pole impact test. This was because Ignis did not have head protection even as an option. Furthermore, the Ignis also lacks ESC as a standard. And it also does not even comply with the new pedestrian safety norms, both of which are now part of GNCAP protocols.

Child Protection

For child occupant protection, the Ignis scored 3.86 points out of a maximum of 49. The hatchback got a CRS (child restraint system) installation score of 3.86 points. Meanwhile, it got zero points each for the dynamic score and vehicle assessment score.
