Jawa & Jawa Forty Two Kitna Deti Hai? Fuel efficiency revealed

If you love timeless pieces of art you probably know about the reborn Jawa Motorcycles. The old boys from 50s’ proudly associated themselves and the Jawa cult still has a large fan following. Its classic curves and retro design certainly has the power to throw you in nostalgia. In November of 2018 Classic Legends (CLPL), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, launched two motorcycles, Jawa Classic and Jawa Forty Two and revealed the third model, Jawa Perak in India.

With a strong network of 95 dealerships across the country. Classic Legends have started delivering the first batch of motorcycles as per their promised schedule.

One question that everyone has been asking was ‘kitna deti hai’, and yes, we here are referring to its fuel-efficiency figure, which Jawa revealed as 37.5 kmpl tested and certified by the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). And we think 37.5 kmpl is a very respectable figure for a 293cc motorbike.

Powering the Jawa and the Jawa Forty Two is a 293cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC motor producing a maximum of 27 BHP of power and 28 Nm of peak torque coupled to a 6-speed constant mesh gearbox. The Jawa and the Jawa Forty Two both get a 280mm disc brake with a floating caliper and ABS on the 18-inch front wheel, a 153mm drum brake on a 17-inch rear wheel and an optional dual-channel ABS. The suspension is a telescopic hydraulic type fork on the front and twin hydraulic shocks with gas canisters on the rear.

The ARAI figures are performed in a controlled environment and not real world tests, but the engine on the Jawa is shared with the Mahindra Mojo and while we had already tested that bike in the past it returned a real-world fuel efficiency of close to 27-29 kmpl within the city and 32-35 kmpl on the highway. Since the Jawa’s are set-up differently than its cousin, the Mojo, it is safe to say that the ARAI figures are quite close to what they are claiming.

The Jawa is available for sale with a price tag of INR 1.64 lakh for the single-channel ABS and INR 1.72 lakh for the dual-channel ABS variant. The Jawa Forty Two comes in with a price tag of INR 1.55 lakh for the single-channel ABS and INR 1.63 lakh for the dual channel ABS.
