Mumbai-Goa Ro-Ro service details

RO-RO service

A Ro-Ro service, aka Roll-On Roll-Off, is referred to as a transport service that allows individuals to travel across states by driving their cars on the train. This service not only reduces travel time but also reduces fatigue, as well as increases safety for individuals globally.

Konkan Railways is planning to introduce the Ro-Ro service for private vehicles soon. The Ro-Ro service between Maharashtra and Kerala is already active, but it is only available for commercial vehicles as of now.

Due to the safe nature of travel and less fuel expense, the Ro-Ro travel service is already very popular among the truckers. However, the Konkan Railways is now planning to introduce this scheme during the Ganpati Festival this year, citing the travel of people on the Konkan range for the festival.

In this service, there are special wagons, which are designed for every vehicle type. Travellers can directly roll and park their vehicle into these wagons, and later roll off when they reach the destination.

The service will be launched as a pilot project initially. If it becomes financially viable and popular enough, the Konkan Railways will continue the Ro-Ro service for private vehicles.

Speaking of the travel time between Mumbai and Goa, it usually takes 10-12 hours to drive either way. However, with the new highways, the travel time has reduced, but not as much as one would appreciate. The Ro-Ro service will help in avoiding accidents, as well as save the cost of travel between Mumbai and Goa.

Our verdict

The Roll-On and Roll-Off service is mainly used between distant cities that are hard to reach due to the regional terrain. However, it has not been used by private car owners in India until now. The upcoming service is expected to bring a substantial change for Mumbai-Goa travellers.
