Yamaha’s iconic RX100 name plate is set to make a comeback. No, the Japanese bike maker is unlikely to launch a new RX 100 commuter bike, but wants to use the name on a modern bike that pays homage to the yesteryear’s icon.
Modern Yamaha RX100 : What to expect?
The classic RX 100 was well known for its light weight, nimble handling and its power. Not to mention its exhaust sound as well. The iconic bike’s sound was thanks to its two stroke engine.
To recreate the aforementioned features in a modern bike will require a higher displacement four-stroke motor. A minimum of a 200cc engine would be necessary.
Yamaha India’s Chairman Eishin Chihana has noted the cult status of the Yamaha RX100 but also suggested that unless the company is able to make justice to the brand, it is unlikely to launch a new model with the same name.
In today’s line-up of Yamaha bikes, the 155cc motor commonly used in India won’t make the cut. Hence unless the company comes up with an all-new bike delivering on the above qualities, we should not get our hopes high.
Yamaha’s premium EV for India
The electric two-wheeler segment in India is heating up. It has been experiencing strong growth. But major internal combustion engine (ICE)-based manufacturers like Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Royal Enfield have yet to enter this space. This lack of urgency is in contrast to the fast-paced approach typically seen with EV startups.
Yamaha, in particular, had plans to introduce its Neo electric scooter in India. However, there have been significant changes since then. Thus, leading to a delay of around 2 to 3 years for Yamaha’s entry into the Indian EV market. This cancellation of the Neo’s launch has disappointed Yamaha enthusiasts who were eagerly awaiting the brand’s electric offering.
