Volvo reveals EX90 EV 7-seater flagship SUV

Volvo has finally revealed the new all-electric, seven-seat EX90 SUV. This is the brand’s new flagship model which will most likely go on sale globally in 2024. This new EV SUV is effectively an electric-only equivalent to the existing Volvo XC90.

It is the third electric model from the Swedish brand after the XC40 Recharge and the C40 Recharge. But the EX90 uses the underpinning of a dedicated EV SPA2 architecture. Thus, it closely relates to the recently revealed Polestar 3, although the EX90 has three-row seating.

Volvo EX90 Exterior Highlights

In terms of design, the EX90 uses the Concept Recharge. The EX90 retains the key Volvo design cues like Thor’s hammer headlights and the blanked-off grille seen on the XC40 Recharge.

On the side, we see flush door handles and sharply styled 22-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. On the rear, we get a rather unique split tail lamp design matching perfectly with a C-shaped LED unit below.

Volvo EX90 Interior Design

The stand-out feature on the interior is the large 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen. This features Volvo’s Google-based infotainment. The EX90 also uses a 5G connection as a standard to aid over-the-air updates. At the moment, the EX90 is available only with the top-spec Ultra trim. The key features include equipment like a panoramic sunroof, 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system featuring Dolby Atmos and speakers integrated into the headrests. The EX90 also comes with phone key technology as a standard wherein the smartphone serves the function of the key for the car.

Volvo EX90 EV Key Features

EX90 being a Volvo gets all the high-tech safety features. In fact, Volvo says that the new EX90 is the safest car they have ever built. The key feature is the Lidar (light detection and ranging) which is a standard fitment with the sensor mounted on the front edge of the roof. That can also work in sync with a host of other interior and exterior sensors and cameras to power advanced driver assistance and safety systems.

Volvo says the systems will eventually offer an over-the-air subscription update that will enable “unsupervised autonomous driving” in certain conditions and places. The interior sensors also have the ability to gauge eye concentration to warn about driving while distracted or drowsy.

Volvo EX90 EV Powertrain Details

Initially, The EX90 will come with a twin-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain with two levels of output. The Twin Motor models will have 408 HP and 770 Nm as performance figures. Meanwhile, the Performance models will offer 517 HP and 910 Nm.

EX90 will draw power from a 111kWh battery delivering a range of 600 km (WLTP cycle). The EV SUV also supports fast charging and it can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes.

India Launch Timeline

In India, Volvo has said that it aims to launch one EV every year. The XC40 Recharge arrived earlier this year. Meanwhile, the launch of the C40 Recharge will happen in 2023. Thus we expect the EX90’s India launch to happen sometime after that.
