Volkswagen is working on a new 3-row SUV. Dubbed as the Tayron, the car is slated for an Indian launch by 2025. The Tayron is based on the 3rd-gen Tiguan platform.

With the new Tiguan up for a refresh, the German carmaker plans to retain the Tiguan as a 5-seater SUV while the new Tayron will take over the 3-row duties.
The Tayron will be developed for sale in Europe and North America. It will be produced in the company’s Wolfsburg plant in Germany.
In terms of design, the Tayron will be similar to the Tiguan. Both cars will share similar dimensions but will have individual unique identities. Volkswagen is likely to introduce the Tayron in SUV and Coupe form factors. While the coupe will house 5 seats, the SUV version is likely to have both 5 and 7 seat options. Further, the Tayron will be slightly larger than the Tiguan as well.
Based on the updated MQB platform, the Tayron will share its underpinnings with the next-generation Passat and Tiguan. The carmaker plans to extensively work on the suspension of the Tayron to offer a better performance along with improved refinement.
Volkswagen Tayron in China
This is not the first time that Volkswagen is using the Tayron name. The company already sells the Tayron in China in both SUV and coupe form called as the Tayron X. However, these are China specific models.
However, this is not the first time the carmaker is using this moniker as it sells a left-hand drive, 5-seater SUV based on the Tiguan AllSpace exclusively in China. There’s even a coupe derivative of the same called the Tayron X.
Volkswagen Tayron : Powertrain details
In the international markets, we can expect the German carmaker to offer a choice of 2.0-litre petrol or diesel engines. These could also be configured with an optional 48V mild hybrid system. The transmission duties are expected to be handled by a 7-speed DCT gearbox.
Volkswagen was also reported to have mentioned two plug in hybrid engine options as well. These could be rated at 204 HP and 272 HP. All the powertrain offerings are expected to comply with the Euro 7 norms.
That said, in India, we could only get the 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with an automatic DCT gearbox.
