Volkswagen plans affordable EV for India, but launch is far away

Written by Nizam Shaikh

Volkswagen could be planning to launch an electric vehicle in the Indian market. Media reports suggest that the brand could bring an affordable electric vehicle to the Indian market. Reportedly, the brand’s ICE vehicle strategy and EV strategy overlap and are not different from each other.

In addition to this, Volkswagen would work to localise the product to cater to larger volumes and compete in the entry-level segment in India. However, these would require large investments. To justify the investments the brand will likely need a voluminous product. Volkswagen could also produce the EV in India for the export market to increase volumes and meet demands at a global level.

Volkswagen Peak Project

Furthermore, reports also reveal that by 2026 Volkswagen is likely to bring the Peak EV Project. Under the project VW could be planning to introduce Electric SUVs in the Indian market. The electric SUV is likely to be based on the MEB21G platform. Furthermore, the brand is likely to position the EV in the mid-size SUV segment. Under the Peak Project, the brand is likely to offer the Volkswagen branded EV first and then it may introduce an EV for the Skoda brand.
