As reported online, the German car brands VW and Skoda are aligned to bring hybrid cars to India in the future.

Considering the potential of the hybrid models, their fuel efficiency, and the success of the hybrid cars like the Maruti Grand Vitara, the carmaker duo has decided to bring a new platform soon.

The current VW/Skoda models are based on the CMP (China Main Platform), which has been designed for ICE, strong hybrid, and electric powertrains.

However, for the Indian market, the brands are said to be developing a new IMP21 (India Main Platform), which is reported to be heavily localised. The IMP21 is a direct derivative of the CMP architecture, focusing on localisation and cost effectiveness.

The upcoming hybrid technology will initially feature on the sedans and mid-size SUV models, including the upcoming Virtus facelift, Slavia facelift, Kushaq facelift, and Taigun facelift cars, which are scheduled to debut in the coming years.

Additionally, the new hybrid cars will be exported to the global markets; hence, these will be manufactured to withstand the CAFE3 emission norms, as well as the latest OBD-2B emission norms in India.

With that said, more details regarding the hybrid powertrain will be revealed in the future. We expect to see the first localised Volkswagen/Skoda hybrid cars in India by 2028.

Our verdict

The hybrid cars have seen a tremendous growth and a rise in popularity the recent years. The primary reason behind their popularity is the fuel efficiency and smooth driving experience. Volkswagen and Skoda hybrid cars are likely to offer a new era of models, which will hopefully change the fortune for the brands in India.
