Tata Safari Petrol – What do we know so far?

Ever since the launch of the Harrier and Safari, the one major disadvantage that Tata has been suffering with is the non-availability of a petrol engine for these SUVs. However, the company showcased a 1.5-litre TGDi turbo-petrol engine at the Bharat Mobility Expo in 2023, and now the engine is about to mark its debut soon.

For what is suspected, the test model seen in the latest spy photos is a petrol engine Safari. The heavily camouflaged test car is seen parked alongside the regular production model, a white colour Safari. Seeing the photos, there is no change to its appearance, size, or features on the test car, as compared to the production model.

However, the talking point is what is underneath the bonnet. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is a four-cylinder unit, develops 170 PS of peak power and 280 Nm of peak torque. This engine is likely to be mated with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox option.

While these figures are not very thrilling in comparison to the Mahindra XUV700, the TGDI petrol engine will certainly expand the Safari/Harrier range. Moreover, with the petrol engine on offer, the introductory price for both SUVs will take a dip, thus making them more affordable.

The suspected launch timeline of the petrol engine Safari and Harrier is around the festive season this year.

Our verdict

Tata Safari has lacked the petrol engine option since its launch. This has led customers to flee to other options like the Mahindra XUV700. With the launch of the new 1.5L TGDI engine, the Safari and Harrier SUVs will become more accessible.
