Tata Harrier petrol – What to expect?

It is no hidden fact that Tata has been developing a petrol engine for the Harrier and Safari for a long time. Likely to debut later this year, a petrol Harrier test car was recently spotted in Satara during a night test run.

As seen in the spy shots, the rear end of the test car shows an identical design as the diesel-equipped variants. It features a connected LED light setup and the same bumper design as the current model.

Powering the Harrier petrol will be a new 1.5-litre GDI turbo petrol engine, which is expected to produce 170 bhp and 280 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. Tata will offer this engine with the option of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

It could have been an EV Harrier test mule, but the presence of the exhaust can on the lower left side and the lack of an independent suspension make sure that it is indeed an ICE model.

The Harrier EV is also scheduled to launch this year, and it was showcased to the audience at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 as well. However, Tata seems to have continued its testing as opposed to the earlier plan of launching it by April 2025.

The expected launch timeline for the Harrier petrol is around the festive season this year. With an affordable petrol version available, the starting price for the Harrier could become as low as Rs 13 lakh (ex-showroom).

Our verdict

The Harrier moniker has undergone a huge decrement in sales over the past year. The primary reason behind this is the high pricing and lack of a petrol engine option. The new 1.5-litre GDI engine will eliminate both of these issues soon.
